I’m a carer for my two adult sons who have Fragile X Syndrome. Since May 2021, I have also been a carer for my husband who had a brain stem stroke and has just been diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer. It seems full on for us but because we have been caring for such a long time, it’s integrated into our daily routine. My two sons need the most support. They can do things physically but need a lot of prompting, encouragement, and support. They need support via prompts to have their breakfast and make their lunch for the day. They go to a disability program five days a week. I have just employed a support worker who is providing support in our home where we need it. Both boys have jobs to do and it’s helping them be successful at what they do. Our goal is to set them up in supported independent living and that is a medium-term goal for us - spanning about 5 years. They have time out from us with our support worker and she works with the boys growing their skill and confidence at independent living. (Submitted in October 2022)
