My Caring Story
I never planned to become a carer. It happened gradually — through love, responsibility and the realisation that Mum needed me.
Over the past few months, my role as a daughter has increasingly become a role as a carer. Mum’s health has changed, and I have found myself managing appointments, medications, speaking with doctors, accompanying her to hospital and advocating for her when she cannot always advocate for herself.
Recently, I had to call an ambulance when Mum became extremely unwell. It was frightening, but the paramedics were incredibly calm and kind, not only towards Mum but towards my sister and me. Their compassion reminded me how important support can be during some of the most difficult moments.
We are now navigating cognitive decline and further medical investigations. There are still many unanswered questions, and I am learning to cope with the uncertainty while trying to make sure Mum gets the care and support she needs.
Being a carer can be exhausting. There are practical responsibilities, but also worry, fear, frustration and sometimes guilt.
I am learning that caring is about taking things one day, one appointment and one decision at a time.
